![]() On this day, providers are encouraged to screen for gambling disorders as a united effort to bring community wellness in addressing this growing behavioral health issue. Gambling Disorder Screening Day will be held on March 8th. Warning signs that gambling might be a problem include thinking about gambling often lying or covering up gambling behaviors missing time with friends and loved ones to gamble gambling to escape negative feelings or problems gambling more money than you can afford or planned, and unsuccessfully trying to cut back or stop gambling. Gambling with money you cannot afford to lose and viewing gambling as a means of making money and even chasing losses among other things can result in extensive financial hardship, additional emotional stressors, and puts a strain on family relationships. However, gambling can have serious negative consequences when not staying within those set limits. Most adults have no issues with gambling and stay within self-set parameters like any other form of entertainment in terms of money and time spent allowed. Nationally between 1% and 3% of the general adult (18+) population, or over 5.1 million people, experience a gambling problem every year. Problem gambling is the spectrum of all gambling behavior patterns that compromise, disrupt or damage personal, family, or vocational pursuits. Yet, there is hope - problem gambling is treatable. As a result of the extended periods of isolation due to COVID, major triggers for problem gambling are being exacerbated such as: depression, anxiety, loneliness, boredom, and stress. ![]() It is a time for a state-wide effort to bring awareness to gambling disorders, which has been classified by the American Psychiatric Association as a behavioral addiction.Īwareness remains key to helping individuals recognize behavioral health matters for them to take action and seek treatment for improved wellness. This year’s theme is “ Awareness + Action.” March is recognized as Problem Gambling Awareness Month.
